Our Story
Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity- Phi Chapter has a storied tradition of brotherhood and community service. We stand committed to enhancing lives and promoting fraternity values as we fundraise for our future Phi Chapter House, a cornerstone for generations to come.
A Brief History of the Phi Chapter
The Phi Chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma was founded at Southeastern Louisiana College (now SLU) in Hammond, Louisiana, on May 27, 1939. The chapter originated from the fraternity Sigma Lambda Chi, which was absorbed into the national organization under the leadership of Clayton Blomquist and Ben Eble.
The installation was conducted by the Sigma Chapter from Arkansas State Teachers College, now the University of Central Arkansas. Thomas Womack, Jr. was the first initiate of Phi Chapter. Blomquist, Eble, and Womack would go on to serve as influential figures in the chapter and in the broader fraternity.
From 1939 -1961, Phi Chapter was the only national fraternity on Southeastern’s campus. As Sigma Tau Gamma’s 21st chapter, Phi has initiated over 1,200 brothers, building a legacy grounded in leadership, scholarship, service, and lifelong brotherhood.
Phi Chapter alumni have played pivotal roles in the national organization, including serving as National Presidents, Regional Vice Presidents, Foundation Trustees, and members of the Board of Directors. Several alumni also currently serve on the Fraternity Board of Directors and the WPN Housing Board.

In recent years, the chapter has continued its legacy of excellence. Phi Chapter was named Southeastern’s Outstanding Interfraternity Chapter in both 2021 and 2022, and received national recognition as Most Improved Chapter in 2021 and for Alumni Engagement in 2022 and 2025. Paul Phillips III was honored with the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award, and Dickie Whitson received the 2025 Prof. Grubbs Advisor of the Year Award.
